Introduction

Starting preschool is a big milestone—for children and families alike. While exciting, it can also bring anxiety and uncertainty. The key to a smooth transition lies in preparation. By introducing small changes at home and understanding what to expect, parents can help their child feel safe, confident, and ready to embrace this new stage.

Helpful Habits at Home Before Starting Preschool

Here are a few things you can do at home before the first day of preschool to make the transition easier:

✔ Adjust sleep routines early. Set a consistent bedtime and morning routine a few weeks in advance so your child gets used to waking up and sleeping on schedule.

✔ If your child is breastfed, gradually introduce a bottle or cup to help them adjust to new feeding habits.

✔ Practice short separations. Let your child spend short periods with a trusted relative or friend to help them get used to being apart from you.

✔ Visit the preschool together. Exploring the space beforehand helps your child become familiar with the setting.

✔ Talk about preschool. Share what they can expect—new friends, toys, singing, painting, stories!

✔ Encourage social play. Spend time in parks or playgroups to help them feel comfortable around other children their age.

Supporting a Successful Start at Preschool

Starting preschool is a big emotional leap—it marks a shift in daily routines, relationships, and environments. Here’s how to make the adaptation period smoother for everyone:

✔ Stay calm and confident. Children sense their parents’ emotions. If you’re anxious, they may feel unsure too. Staying relaxed sends the message that everything is okay.

✔ Expect strong emotions. Many children cry or resist at first—that’s normal. Some adjust quickly, while others take more time. Be patient and understanding.

✔ Plan ahead. If possible, take a few days off work to support your child during the first days.

✔ Use comfort objects. A favorite toy, blanket, or item from home can give children a sense of security and connection.

✔ Start slowly. Begin with short stays at preschool alongside a familiar adult, then gradually increase time spent independently based on the child’s comfort.

✔ Say goodbye every time. Always let your child know you’re leaving and that you’ll be back. Never slip out unnoticed—this can create fear and insecurity.

✔ Trust and communication matter. Talk openly with your child’s teacher. Share your child’s habits, preferences, and any worries you may have. The more they know, the better they can support your child.

✔ Celebrate small steps. When you pick your child up, show interest in their day: “What did you play? Who did you meet?” This helps them feel valued and reinforces positive connections with the preschool environment.

Family Involvement at Ategorritxo Preschool (Donosti)

At Ategorritxo Preschool, we believe adaptation begins the moment a family chooses our center. That’s why, after enrollment, we invite all new families to join a pre-start meeting.

During this visit:

  • Families explore the classrooms, meet the staff, and learn about daily routines, rules, and educational methods.

  • Parents join smaller group meetings with their child’s assigned educator to begin forming a personal connection.

  • Each family also schedules a one-on-one meeting to share information about their child and ask questions in a supportive environment.

To help families prepare, we’ve also created an adaptation guide brochure summarizing key tips and providing support during this important time.

Final Thoughts

Starting preschool is a process that involves the whole family. With empathy, preparation, and strong cooperation between parents and educators, children can feel safe, seen, and supported as they begin this exciting new chapter.
